Today is the fifth of May, often called by its Spanish equivalent Cinco de Mayo. On this date in 1862, the Mexican Army defeated French invaders near the city of Puebla de los Angeles. Even so, the French weren't completely repulsed until 1867, so the Battle of Puebla wasn't all that significant in the long run. North of the Rio Grande, Cinco de Mayo became a noted date mainly because of beer.

Before I get to today's news, I must update something from yesterday. The Daily Mail link, which I included in yesterday's post now indicates that the Vatican denies making any agreement with Saudi Arabia involving the construction of churches. The link to the Egypt Independent, cited by the DM, still no longer works. It looks like the story was indeed fake news.
